Melmerby 10k
RACE RESULTS 2010
The Melmerby race is the quickest of all the races in the Series with the fastest finishing time of 29.49 by Kevin McCluskey in 1996.
The race start in the village and exits the village in the direction of Wath, but just before Wath the course turns right down a narrow lane, you carry on along country lanes before turning right and entering the village of Sutton Howgrave.
You enter the village, do a circuit of the village and leave on the same road as you enterered, at this stage of the race runners are on both sides of the road entering and leaving the village, please take note of marshall's instructions.
On leaving the village you carry straight on in the direction of Wath, on entering Wath you take a left through the village and back onto the road into Melmerby, it's approx 1 mile from there to the finish on the village green in Melmerby.
As you are running on narrow country lanes with high hedges conditions can be quite humid on cool days, and very hot on warm days so be prepared. Strong winds can be a problem as the course is in a slightly elevated position.
So this race has the potential for you to record your 10k PB, so good luck.
RACE REPORT 2010
The first half of Sundays race was a real slog, but this did not deter Darran Bilton who set a pretty brisk pace, and by the ik mark had built up a 50m lead on a group containing Fergus Meade, Alasdair Tatham, Andrew Holiday, Richard Watson and Phillip Elliott-Dick.
By the 3k point Darran was away and gone, with Fergus still chasing hard from Alasdair who was clear from Phillip, Andrew and Richard. It stayed that way until the runners turned in Sutton Howgrave with the wind at last behind them.
Darren really put the hammer down now stretching his lead to 30 secs, Fergus and Alasdair still chased hard, whilst Andrew was now starting to pull clear in 4th, with Phillip in 5th just ahead of Richard in 6th.
Having cycled behind the 6th man at 4 miles I then sped off to catch Darren, I finally caught him at the last water stop, he had in that distance extended his lead to 70 secs, race over.
In the last kilometer Fergus was still holding on in 2nd with Alasdair in 3rd, Andrew was giving chase for 3rd place but was running out of road, whilst Richard had moved into 5th place with Phillip in 6th. And thats how they finished, a good race in testing conditions.
The Ladies race was much as I had expected with Erika Johnson leading from start to finish, with O/45 lady Sarah Nettleton chasing hard for 2nd place. The main battle was for 3rd place with two more O/45 ladies having a real battle, Lorraine Hiles looked to have it won, when with a mile to go she started to slow with stitch, Tonia Richardson seized on the opportunity to close the gap but as the finish neared Lorraine picked up the pace to hold off Tonia by 13 secs. The O/45 ladies section looks very competitive.
