The first race in the Series is a tough one. It starts from the School in the village of Grantley and heads out in the direction of Kirkby Malzeard. Leaving the village you turn left onto a quiet road that climbs gradually for a mile to the moor at High Skelding, you then run onto the moor and continue over the moor until you exit onto the Pateley road, at this point I should tell you that if the weather has been wet the moor can be very boggy.
The next mile is a fast downhill section until you reach the water stop at the Laverton crossroads, the course then becomes undulating until you reach the next crossroads and take a right turn back towards Grantley. You have a short flat section followed by a steep downhill run of approx 400m, and we all know what goes down must go up, the hill back into Grantley is not easy, but at least the last 200m is downhill to the finish at Grantley School. The Fountains 10k in a few words, if only the race was as easy. Good luck.

REPORT
Yet another win for Gary Dunn, and a first local win for Michela Stepto.
Weather conditions were pretty good for road running but not moorland bog trotting, everyone seemed to make it home safe if not muddy.
Gary told me he had not been very confident prior to the race as he had spent most of this year picking up colds and viruses, while trying to train for his marathon debut in Edinburgh, but things turned out well and he ran 20 secs quicker than last year.
In the ladies race it was a first win in a Black Sheep Series race for Michela Stepto of  Stockport Harriers, Michela has been a Race Series regular for the last 10 years and has at last found some winning form.
Harrogate Harriers Paul Render MO/50 and 8th overall, showed a clean pair of heels to come home first vet, Paul had a good battle against Andrew Dobby in 7th place and David Bacon in 6th place, David will hope for better luck this year as he had to drop out of last years Series due to injury.
With 39 secs covering the first 3 ladies, Karen Hopwood 2nd, and Sue Dolan 3rd this years ladies race could be the best competition for a number of years, and last years Series winner Erika Nutter has yet to run.
