The 1/2m starts from the market place in Masham, going round the market place, exiting on to Silver St., then turning left onto the Leyburn Road for 200m when the route turns left into a housing estate. It wends its way through the estate exiting onto the Swinton road.
The route climbs gradually to Swinton Castle where it goes through the Castle grounds and exits onto the road to Fearby. The undulating route follows the walls of Swinton Park for approx. 2 miles to Swinton Saw Mill .You then tackle your first serious climb up School Hill which finishes at Kell Bank School. The course then joins the Pateley road and undulates to Leighton Bridge, then turns right up Breary Banks and follows the narrow moorland road to Spout House Farm when it meets a section of grass track that takes you into the valley of Colsterdale.
Turning right onto the road out of Colsterdale the route undulates back to the village of Fearby. You then start a long downhill section of approx. 3 miles, which is hard on tired legs. The downhill ends with a sharp steep climb back up to Swinton Castle, where you go round the castle walls and back onto the road into Masham. From Swinton you have approx. 1.5 miles back to the finish on Masham Market Place.
